Profile

Peter Rogers is a lecturer in the Sociology of Law and Criminology in the Department of Sociology. Peter completed his PhD at the University of Newcastle upon Tyne (UK) in urban regeneration and the social exclusion of young people, fostering a keen interest in the sociology of space and the operations of democratic governance. This has developed further with work as a Research Associate at Manchester University on the New Security Challenges programme focussing on the 'Everyday Resilience of the City' culminating in a recent book with Jon Coaffee and David Murakami-Wood from Palgrave Macmillan (2008). Before moving to Australia in 2008 Peter was a lecturer in Cultural Studies, Criminology and Sociology at Manchester Metropolitan University, and has been an active member of the British Sociological Association (BSA), sitting on the executive council as a trustee and founding the Urban Theory and Research Study Group (UTR), see link for more details: http://www.britsoc.co.uk/specialisms/URBAN+THEORY+AND+RESEARCH+STUDY+GROUP.htm

Current Research Agenda

Main area of interest in current research are the impact of security, civil contingencies and integrated emergency management / comprehensive crisis management on the democratic project at local, regional, national and international scales. This includes forthcoming work on the role of communication of risk, hazard, threats and disasters in democratic governance and shifting emphases in contemporary governmentality, as well as reputational resilience and place-marketing and the impact of security and contingencies on urban space.

Peter has also published in the areas of urban regeneration and youth subcultural participation in governance. This strand of research seeks to develop the rhythmanalytical project in socio-spatial theory within a framework of meaningful participation and participatory appraisal; seeking to further emphasise the need for new creative approaches and tool kits of active community cohesion for developing meaningful and active citizenship across minority groups.

A third area of work is in the sociology of knowledge, critiquing the existing status quo in academia around research methods, the contract research model of scholarship and activation of the academy as a critical political force for positive change in global society.
