Masters and Diplomas in Social Research by Coursework

Increasingly, sophisticated social research is demanded by the public, private, university and community sectors. Organisations need to be able to survey their clients, draw on the insights of social planners, sociologists, organisational thinking and policy theory in designing policy. They increasingly need researchers and employees who can think about social problems in a complex and informed way, and who can play a role in implementing and evaluating research and policy.

The Department offers both Masters and Graduate Diploma-level degrees in applied social research and public policy, which are completed through coursework. The courses are especially useful for strengthening applied social research skills – both qualitative and quantitative – and understanding of Australian public and social policy.
All these courses build skills in qualitative and quantitative social research, research design, evaluation, and reflective as well as critical social analysis of the contemporary policy process.
The program is intended for those who are employed or who want employment in: community-based and non-government service organisations; policy agencies in government; trade unions; local government; marketing and social research; and private consultancy. Many current students already work in social research jobs for government, the private sector and community organisations.
