Postgraduate Upgrade Policy
A candidate enrolled in a Master's by Research degree (M. Phil) can be considered for a PhD transfer in Sociology if he or she has:
1. completed a minimum one year of candidature at M.Phil level.
2. in the opinion of the candidate's supervisor and the Sociology departmental postgraduate committee, completed work of a standard where the successful completion of a PhD was highly probable, if not assured.
3. written the equivalent of one thesis chapter (which could be in the form of a conference, seminar paper or lecture), which is judged by the candidate's supervisor and the Sociology departmental committee, to be of PhD standard.
