Postgraduate Research Notice

Students will be accepted for research degrees in sociology if they meet the admission requirements. However, acceptance into a research degree is also dependent on the availability of supervision. Prospective candidates are strongly advised to approach both the Convenor of Postgraduate Research in sociology and potential supervisors before making their application to the University. Applicants are advised to make their inquiries early, as the University deadlines for applications are 3-4 months before the start of each semester of the academic year.

The Department's areas of research specialisation cover a wide field and include cultural sociology and the arts, lifestyles and the media, criminality, modernity and postmodernity, the pragmatics of the policy process, social and political theory, feminist theory, human services, the new technologies, social movements and globalisation, work and employment

Sociology also has a strong interest in interdisciplinary education and a candidate wishing to do a research degree linking sociology to some other area (such as Women's Studies, Aboriginal Studies, Politics or Law) is encouraged to explore the possibilities.
