Postgraduate Resources/Facilities
Divisional information for HDR students
The Sociology Department is very aware that availability of resources can make a difference in assisting students complete their theses. In this light, moves have been initiated to ensure that all students have access to office space, word processing, fax, photocopying, printing, e-mail, telephone and stationery resources.
-
1.1 Full-time PhD and MPhil students are entitled to a desk in a shared office. A phone is located in each room. Phones are also located in the Sociology resources room, which all postgraduates are eligible to use. STD and International calls must be authorised by supervisors.
1.2 Each student will be given an e-mail address. The general address for all postgraduates is socpg@scmp.mq.edu.au.
1.3 Full-time and part-time PhD and MPhil students can obtain a key to the buildings for after hours access. See your supervisor.
1.4 Mail boxes are available for full-time PhD and MPhil students in the common room, C3B/501.
1.5 Photocopying and fax facilities are available to full and part-time PhD and MPhil students. Students can obtain a photocopy pin number, for use in the Department, or a photocopy card, for use in the library (see Departmental Administrator). A supervisor’s authorisation is required when sending a fax.
1.6 Full-time PhD and MPhil students are entitled to stores from the stationery cupboard, located in the Postgraduate resources room (C3B509).
For room, phone, fax, word-processing resources, etc., your contact in the Department is the Departmental Administrator in C3B519, extension 8078. For all other resources, see Mr. Frank Rea, Accounting Officer, W6A700, extension 8884.
2. Through its equipment committee representative, the Department is always on the look out for good second-hand word-processors, printers and other items that can then be loaned to students on a needs basis.
2.1 Where second-hand items are not available and there is a definite need, items might, within budget constraints, be purchased by the Department for the use of students. It is thus always a good idea for students to make a request through their supervisor, if an item is necessary for their research. The request will then be considered on its merits by the Department.
3. Students should be aware that when it is not possible (due to budget constraints) for an item to be purchased by the Department, renting equipment might be an alternative. Such rental requests should be based on at least two quotes and made, on the form available, through the student's supervisor. It will then be forwarded for consideration to the Divisional Postgraduate committee, and then, if unsuccessful, to the Department.
4. Funding of $2000 per candidature, plus $500 for conference attendance for each year for fours years is available to all full time PhD students. The same amount is available for full-time MPhil students over three years. Part-time students are entitled to a pro-rata amount.
4.1 Funding is available for all items listed on the application form available from the Sociology Departmental Administrator.
4.2 It should, however, be noted that where requests in any one year are far lower than the money available, a larger proportion, and even the entirety of a student's entitlement can be made available in one year, if a case is made. The strategy should be IF THE NEED IS THERE, PUT IN THE REQUEST!
4.3 Up to $1250 is also available for students who want assistance with running a conference at Macquarie. Proposals should be forwarded to the Divisional HDR committee with a supervisor’s recommendation.
Up to $3,500 is available from the International Office for a research trip. Two references are required, Check the International Office web site on:
5. Other monies available to students on scholarship include the $4000 from the Macquarie Postgraduate Research Fund. This is a competitive grant made in collaboration with supervisors that requires an application similar to a Small ARC, or MURG, grant. The closing dates are in March and August of each year. Check the MQ Research Office web site for information on:
http://www.research.mq.edu.au/
5.1 It is strongly recommended that applicants attend a grant writing seminar prior to submission. The supervisor must certify attendance at such a seminar.
5.2 As a condition of application, applicants must make themselves available for interview.
5.3 Macquarie international travel grant: up to $3500 is available. Check web site: http://www.international.mq.edu.au/
6. Generally, the Department is looking for new ways in which it can help Higher Degree Research students with equipment of all kinds. It is therefore important for each postgraduate student to keep the Department informed or his or her needs.
