Welcome to the Department of Sociology at Macquarie University

Sociology at Macquarie has earned a strong reputation for its research and teaching programs. Our undergraduate program covers exciting areas that include: contemporary Australian society, popular culture, the sociology of media, the sociology of work and social policy, the place of intimacy in social life, social movements and social theory. Students are encouraged to pursue their interests and develop their skills via four distinct pathways:

Our postgraduate program provides students with additional opportunities to broaden their intellectual and professional horizons. The Department offers Masters level opportunities in social research and policy, and a thriving doctoral program.

The Department is made up of research-focused sociologists from diverse backgrounds who have a wide range of strengths in social theory, research methods and social research.

Information meeting for sociology honours 2009

For all students interested in pursuing honours in sociology in 2009-2011, the department of sociology will be hosting a information session. At the meeting you will receive advice on the structure of the sociology honours degree and the application process. Staff will also be on hand to talk about their research interests.

Sociology Colloquium for Semester 2 series

Department of Sociology Colloquium Series for Semester 2, 2008 Sociology Colloquium series commences on 14th of August 2008. Topics include: The British New Left and Frankfurt Critical Theory, The Just-In-Time Self, The Australian Historical Television Mini-series and Nation Making.
