Ten Frequently Asked Questions about Honours in Sociology

1. What grades do I need to get into Honours?

A grade point average (GPA) of 3.00 at 300 level and atleast 2.50 overall

2. What Sociology do I need?

You need a coherency in Sociology that's 12 credit points at 300-level. We recommend a series of units in our Honours Policy for intending Honours students.

3. What work is involved?

It's 40% coursework and 60% thesis. The thesis is 15, 000 words maximum of independent individual research supervised by academic staff.

5. Why do Honours?

You gain theoretical and research skills at a much higher level than pass students and are able to persue your own research interests in an extended way.

Our experience is that employers value Honours degrees very highly for the skills it imparts and in preference to pass degrees. Employers value students who can think independently, form arguments, thoroughly research a topic, and write up a major piece of work.

6. Why do Honours in Sociology?

Because it enables you to develop research and theory skills at a high level in a way that's relevant to contemporary, social, cultural and political changes. This relevance opens up social research and policy positions in government, private companies and community sectors.

8. How do I get a supervisor?

You may approach an academic staff member informally but you should also discuss it with the Honours Convenor.

10. Can I do double honours?

Yes, in conjunction with the other Department, we will tailor a program for you. E.g. it might consist of a jointly supervised and marked thesis, and one seminar from each discipline.
